The Global Insurance Accelerator (GIA), the world's first InsurTech accelerator focused solely on innovation for the insurance industry, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Managing Director. This is a full time position that is located in Des Moines (residency in Des Moines is required). Informal discussions with interested parties and formal interviews will take place early Q4 of 2018.

The target start date for this role is January 2, 2019. The individual selected to fill the role must be able to assume this leadership position without supervision on June 1, 2019, after a transition/shadow period with the existing Managing Director, Brian Hemesath, during the GIA's fifth cohort which runs January to May, 2019.

Brian Hemesath will become the Alumni Program Director and Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR), working in a support role specific to the GIA portfolio. This new hire and the ongoing role for Brian Hemesath is part of a comprehensive transition and strategic planning process designed to promote continuity for the GIA, the annual 100-day accelerator program, and the GIA's alumni.

Position Title: Managing Director
Reports To: GIA Board Chair

Position Responsibilities:
The position of Managing Director of the GIA is an executive level, salaried position. This senior staff role shoulders overall responsibility for the successful completion of the strategic goals and operating objectives of the GIA. Specifically, this position is tasked with:
  1. Working with GIA investors to set strategic goals for the GIA.
  2. Planning and executing the 100-day accelerator program, includng: (a) guiding GIA investors through the cohort selection process, (b) preparing the cohort to successfully present at the GIA's demo day at the Global Insurance Symposium.
  3. Attending, and often speaking/presenting at, industry events to continue to grow the GIA's stature as an insurance innovation leader. The selected candidate can anticipate four to six such events each year between May and October.
  4. Guiding efforts which build and maintain brand awareness and outreach, including: (a) development of relationships with a variety of stakeholders, (b) oversight of GIA media and marketing activities.
  5. Overseeing planning and evolution of InsurTech Week (GIA's fall event).
  6. Serving as a committee member for the Global Insurance Symposium.
  7. Coaching and motivating staff and contractors to achieve results.
  8. Occasionally emptying the dishwasher.
  9. Meeting with prospective investors and explaining participation benefits.
  10. Ability to manage investment fund matters in terms of analyzing and exercising fund rights in coordination with legal support.

Position Requirements:
  1. Passion for startups, entrepreneurs and technology ("founder first" mentality).
  2. Ideal candidates will have started or been an early hire (key player) at one or more technology-focused companies. Experience as a significant mentor to a founder may be a suitable replacement.
  3. 5+ years of a mix of leadership, project management and event management experience.
  4. Role requires autonomous thinking and action - individual should require little-to-no supervision to execute the board's vision.
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  6. The following background/experience is a plus: (a) experience and understanding of the venture capital industry (angel to Series A financing), (b) ability to broadly comprehend and assess technology solutions, (c) understanding and/or experience in the insurance industry.
